Callaway Epic Max Star Driver & Fairway Woods

Are you a golfer who could use more clubhead speed and greater distance?

If so, you may be what the golf industry likes to call a ‘force-limited’ golfer.

For whatever reason, you have a slower swing speed—perhaps from aging or just plain physiology. And you’re losing distance as a result.

If this sounds familiar, we have good news.

The new Epic Max Star Driver & Fairway Woods are custom made just for you.

These new offerings from Callaway rely on lightweight designs to increase your clubhead speed, your ball speed and your distance.

They are long and light, easier to swing, and incredibly forgiving. You get shot shaping control from a lightweight titanium sliding weight and enjoy an attractive black finish and striking gold highlights.

All in all, the new Epic Max Star Driver & Fairway Woods offer the ideal solution for a slower swing speed.

The Epic Max Star Driver

The Callaway Epic Max Star driver features the same technology and performance as Callaway’s more mainstream Epic Max driver offerings with some tweaks to lighten the club and help you gain speed.

Callaway testing showed some golfers gained 3-5 mph of clubhead speed with the new Epic Max Star driver—which translates to 5-10 mph of ball speed, or something in the range of 20 potential added yards when you account for variations in launch and spin.

Now, no one can promise you 20 extra yards, but if you’re a ‘force-limited’ golfer who is now playing with a standard weight driver, you’re likely to have the most to gain from the Callaway Epic Max Star driver.

The Tech Story

The Epic Max Star driver shares the same Jailbreak AI Speed Frame design and the same A.I. Flash Face for enhanced distance as the lineup of other Epic drivers.

While these technologies are all about generating ball speed, your speed as a force-limited golfer will come from the club’s weight savings and shaft length.

High Launch & More Forgiveness

The Epic Max Star driver features a lightweight triaxial carbon fiber crown that saves significant weight versus titanium. Callaway engineers redistributed the saved weight to promote high launch and more forgiveness.  A carbon toe patch saves more weight and adds a slight draw bias for a powerful shot shape.

How Lightweight Is It?

At nine grams, the adjustable perimeter weighting is lighter than a mainstream driver, but that’s the whole point—the Epic Max Star is all about trimming weight to improve swing speed.

In total, the Epic Max Star driver is about 52 grams lighter than the standard Epic Max and 11 grams lighter than Callaway’s previous Epic Flash Star.

The head weighs 186 grams—10 to 15 grams less than Epic Max—and the ultra-premium UST Mamiya ATTAS Speed Series T1100 30 shaft is only 36 grams. A Winn Dri-Tac Lite grip adds just another 25 grams.

This all adds up to a total weight of about 260 grams, compared to the 312 grams of the Epic Max.

Long & Strong

The lightweight shaft is longer than normal at 46 inches, but most force-limited golfers typically hit the ball pretty straight, so adding shaft length is a reasonable way to increase speed without creating inaccuracy off the tee.

Callaway Epic Max Star Fairway Woods

The approach is the same with the new Epic Max Star Fairway Woods as the Epic Max Star driver—Callaway has designed these new ultra-premium, ultra lightweight woods to improve your swing speed and distance.

Here, the key technology is Callaway’s Jailbreak AI Velocity blades, which are placed further from the center of the face than the original Jailbreak design.

It’s a tweak that allows the face to flex while adding vertical stiffness—in essence, a more efficient use of Jailbreak technology.

The emphasis with the Epic Max Star fairway woods is on making it easier for force-limited golfers to get the ball in the air and generate greater distance.

Easier launch, more forgiveness, greater distance. All good, right?

Adjustable Weights & Multiple Loft Options

The Callaway Epic Max Star fairway woods also feature changeable weights to fine tune trajectory. Launch angle and spin rates can be altered by adjusting the weights from front to back.

What’s perhaps most exciting is the range of loft offerings. The Epic Max Star fairway woods come in 3- (15 degree), 5- (18 degree), 7- (21 degree) and 9- (23 degree) versions.

The 9-wood should be particularly welcome for golfers who struggle to get enough lift out of their long irons and even their hybrids.

The woods all feature UST Mamiya ATTAS Speed Series T1100 40 shafts and Winn Dri-Tac Lite grips.
